German silicon wafer fabricator, Siltronic, says its latest 300-millimetres wafer fab facility in Singapore will not be its last project here. The S$1 billion Siltronic Samsung Wafer Fab is a 50-50 joint venture with South Korean semiconductor technology leader, Samsung Electronics.
Samsung will secure a stable supply of 300-millimetre wafers through this deal. Production is expected to begin in mid-2008 and will ramp up to full capacity in 2010. The plant is expected to reach 300,000 wafers per month and hire about 800 employees. The facility, Samsung's first manufacturing investment in Singapore, will also be Singapore's first 300-millimetre wafer substrate and ingot-pulling fab.
