Just had a peakoiler meetup in the afternoon. Very small group, in fact, just two of us. The guy's from San Francisco, his wife's from Singapore, they're visiting on holiday. Impressive background - let's just put it this way for the doomers among us - weapons handling shouldn't be a problem for him, compared to my rusty M-16 training :) Speaking of doomerosity level, he's just about a notch above me (I'm at what is generally considered a "moderate" level), so it's close enough. So it wasn't one of those cases of "doomers versus landers" - which is always an interesting thing to watch over at the forum. Talked quite a bit. The latest and greatest news - the peaking of Kuwait's Burgan field. At least that is what's latest and greatest to the Peak Oil Community. OPEC. Non-OPEC. Indonesia. Malaysia. Singapore. How we happen to be the "peak-oil guy" at our respective offices. The super-long USA commutes. SUV's - and distaste thereof. Hummer Overfloweth. His plans - and mine - which differ a little bit due to differences in age, geography, and circumstances. Jay Hanson. Chavez. Greenspan. France. Honda Civic - comparing fuel consumption notes. He's doing much better - with over 90% highway probably, compared to my roughly 70% highway. ARM's. The real estate market here, and there. Abiotic oil, and what a joke that one is. EROEI. Cattle farming - the resources that go into producing beef - Google it, you may be surprised. Energy stocks (but of course). And much more. You believe how much we've covered? Could've been a whole lot more, but obviously we didn't have all week! He's the ... umm, second, well maybe third peakoiler I've met. One of them runs (/used to run?) a certain local forum (*not* peakoil.com, that ain't local). The other happens to be a member of that local forum - though I've yet to talk to her (yup, female peakoiler) specifically about the subject - some IM's maybe. I'm the first one he's met - which is interesting seeing how there're plenty more where he came from (ought to have at least dozens over in SF), and much less of a local representation here. All in all, a very interesting chat. (2005-11-15 00:17:20 SGT)
