peakoil.com -> heraldsun.news.com.au : Two explosions on a Russian gas pipeline that cut off supplies to neighbouring Georgia were set off deliberately. Explosive devices were used to destroy two sections of the Mozdok-Tbilisi gas pipeline in Russia's Caucasus mountains region of North Ossetia, Interfax news agency quoted Deputy Prosecutor-General Nikolai Shepel as saying. Georgia depends entirely on pipelines from Russia for its gas. The blasts left it - and its neighbour Armenia, which uses Russian gas imported via Georgia - facing an energy crisis just as unusually cold weather swept the region. Georgia has for years suffered from chronic energy shortages but the cut-off comes at an especially bad time because of sub-zero temperatures. Russian natural gas supplies to neighboring Georgia and Armenia were halted early Sunday after two explosions ripped through a gas pipeline linking Russia and Georgia, forcing the two affected countries to look for alternative sources of energy. The blasts damaged the main and reserve pipelines on the Russian side of the border with Georgia in North Ossetia. The Emergency Situations Ministry said no one was hurt in the accident and Russian consumers were not affected. The Georgian capital of Tbilisi is using gas left over in the pipelines and if no alternative solution is found, the city will run out of gas, Tbilisi's gas distribution company Tbilgaz said. Armenia, which receives Russian gas via Georgia, is currently using gas from an underground gas storage facility and has asked consumers to cut back on gas usage. See also : 1.
