Bangladesh : Deepening power crisis

peakoil.com -> financialexpress-bd.com :

Amid widespread public protest against a severe power crisis, the government of Bangladesh has removed State Minister for Power Major General (retd) Anwarul Kabir Talukder MP from his post. Police have filed cases against about 22,100 unidentified persons in the city for going on rampage. Life has become virtually impossible in the capital and elsewhere in the country as continuing severe power crisis has affected the nation with all the consequences. Industrial production has also dropped due to power failure.

The Power Development Board (PDB) said 18 of the 61 power plants are out of production. The country has a daily demand for over 5,000 MW electricity while the daily power supply shortfall exceeds 2,200 MW - the highest shortfall ever. In 2002, the country generated 3100 MW and stayed even with the demand of 3100 MW. Now in 2006, the country generates 3300 MW even though its number of consumers has nearly doubled - mostly in the rural areas. Unless the energy sector grows in a planned way, economic development is bound to be hampered.
