The Australian government is offering motorists up to A$2,000 (S$2,408) to convert their cars to run on liquid petroleum gas, as spiralling global oil prices cause the costs of petrol to soar. Prime Minister John Howard said that his government will spend A$1.576 billion over the next 8 years developing alternative fuel sources. The centrepiece of the plan is a scheme to encourage drivers to switch to LPG, which is in abundant supply in Australia given the country's natural gas and oil reserves. Cash grants of A$1,000 will be awarded for new LPG vehicles. The government will also contribute A$2,000 toward the A$2,500 to A$4,000 cost of converting existing vehicles to use LPG.
