The folks over at vtec.net have posted a huge bunch of detailed info on the 2006 Honda Civic, including lots of photos. About the only things missing are figures for weight and performance (like 0-100 timings). What's next will be the media reviews, and then buyers' impressions, real-world mileage, performance and other issues. My own "decision time" doesn't come till 2007 (buy new Civic Hybrid? hold on to existing non-hybrid Civic? um, post-peak bugout?!), so there's some time yet. Looks like the word is spreading. Just found out that my boss is also "peak-oil aware" - sorta. Had a short discussion around lunch-time, no thanks to the *other* colleague who's been going around telling the folks here that Mr Lowem is "our peak oil guy" .. :) It's going to be interesting to see how smart, well-informed folks, the technorati if you like, take to this concept. Of course they will be weighing both the views of the cornucopians versus that of the peakoilers, but if there is one good thing about $70 oil, it's that it is really starting to get people's attention. But what's next after awareness? We'll have to see about that. (2005-09-01 13:10:08 SGT)

At least 20 oil rigs and platforms are missing in the Gulf of Mexico and a ruptured gas pipeline is on fire after Hurricane Katrina tore through the region, a US Coast Guard official said Wednesday. According to the latest tally Wednesday from the federal Minerals Management Service, a total of 561 platforms and rigs have been evacuated in the Gulf of Mexico, which accounts for a quarter of US oil production. Over 91 percent of normal daily crude oil production in the Gulf - 1.5 million barrels - is now shut down, and more than 83 percent of natural gas production, the MMS said. (2005-09-01 09:58:45 SGT)
