Guide for PSLE Chinese Oral

Ken had scored Band 2 in P3 and P4 for his Chinese Language (MT) and 70-79% in P5. In P6 SA1, he scored 75%.

And I realised after P6 SA1 that he was always dragged down by his Oral. Overall percentage for Oral will be 25% towards the entire Chinese Language paper and all this 25% is in 10min. (Note: see the mark breakdown of Chinese paper in the table below). And he scored in the range of 30marks (out of 50). Therefore he already lost 10marks just for Oral. Needless to say, I panicked and tried to help him in the last minute frenzy. And it does not help that, I do not know how to read nor write in Chinese. So, I seeked out his teacher's advise. She shared with me this strategy and I hope it will help you readers too if you kid struggle in Chinese like mine.

D escribe - descibe the characters in the picture
O pinion - give opinion on the behaviour of the characters good/incorrect
E motion - If I'm the character I will be happy/sad
S uggestion - If I'm at the scene, I will..

When describe, need to elaborate, eg, stating "There is a girl.." is not sufficient. Instead state "There is a girl in ponytail who..."
"A boy... " becomes "A boy wearing shorts is...."
"A girl" becomes "A small girl in a dress is..."

I think after the SA1, we practically practice Chinese Oral with Ken every night, alternating between reading passage and picture conversation. As a result, during his prelim, he did scored his highest marks in Chinese (86%), his personal highest record ever. And, I think his PSLE Chinese may be a high A based on his T-Score. I think if I had start this Oral revision earlier, his results may be even better. Hindsight is always 20-20. Nevertheless, I'm blogging this strategy down to use on my Wenn in his p5 & 6. With Wenn, the resistance is more. *gulpz*

EESIS vs COP

I didn't expect my Ken's results, hence IP (Integrated Programme) was not in my radar. Today, I just learned about this thing called EESIS - Edusave Entrance Scholarships for Independent Schools.

The EESIS are awarded to Singaporean students who are in the top one-third of the total number of secondary 1 pupils admitted to all independent schools (IS), based on their PSLE results.
The independent schools are Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), Hwa Chong Institution, Methodist Girls’ School, Nanyang Girls’ High School, NUS High School, Raffles Girls School, Raffles Institution, School of the Arts, School of Science & Technology, Singapore Chinese Girls’ School, Singapore Sports School and St Joseph’s Institution.

So, all the independent schools, except for SOTA and SSS, offers Integrated Programme.

Then, as I find out more, it seems that the students who qualified for this EESIS will know in their PSLE Eligible Letter (that comes together with their results slip), although we do not even know yet if the students are choosing these Independent Schools. So, what is the meaning of "Singaporean students who are in the top one-third of the total number of secondary 1 pupils admitted to all independent schools". How to know who are the one-third? Why do some pupils have the EESIS offer in their PSLE Eligible Letter?

And, upon calling MOE, they told me the COP for EESIS (2015 PSLE) is 262. So, I think MOE already calculated the top one-third Singaporean and the last student score should be 262. And perhaps with the assumption that all of them will choose one of these independent schools.

I did more googling and then I see a correlation between EESIS and schools COP (cut-off point). There goes my hope for my Ken. TT.TT

So, here's sharing the EESIS COP:

201145,261261262261261258
201045,049260262260259257

With this extra info, can you see a correlation with the COP? Choosing a secondary school is indeed such a nerve wrecking process. And now to wait an entire month for the posting.

At the end of the day, I told my Ken, whatever happens, it happen for a reason. He has done his best. And, he will face whatever outcome with a positive spirit. For a boy who was unsure of 5+3 at P1, who took me a whole month just to teach him, after 9 is 10, after 19 is 20, after 29 is 30..I think he has done very well. And, I'm proud that he put in all the hard work and effort and endure my constant nagging and screaming. Education is a long journey and I want him to continue with his curiosity and determination. I have faith in my boy. And, now, to turn my attention to Wenn.. :)
