I can't read chinese words.. mabbe a few characters.. simple ones.. but, Ken is required to study chinese in singapore.. hence no choice but to learn along with him..
Around Sep last year, Sep-2008, Ken and I learn the basic strokes of chinese characters.. 8 basic strokes which then form 29 complex strokes.. if you see the chart below, HZ=Héng Zhé.. and why is it not Héng Shù?? Well, a turn of 90 degree(and only of 90degree) following a Shù or a Héng is called Zhé. And to write chinese words, you need to follow the stroke order.. for stroke order, u can use nciku site to search for the words.. you then click play at the stroke order

Then someone mentioned about sheng(1) zì = new words.. so i looked high and low how to go about getting these words.. so, trips to Popular were made.. and since i can't read chinese.. attempting to be even standing at the Chinese section overwhelms me.. i mean what to look for? and that's when i caught the title of this book.. "High Frequency Chinese Words"!!

if the book cover do not include "High Frequency Chinese Words", i wouldn't even know what that book is!.. so, i thought if it's high frequency, it means the words appears often.. heh.. and, the back of this book can be torn out to be used as flash cards!.. 1 stone kill 2 birds man..
so, ken and i are learning these new words together.. progress is slow.. although i bought this book last Dec-2008, but i gave myself excuses to relax until after CNY.. so, now we just started.. and it does not help that the past 2 weeks, i was like spending 13-14 hrs at work! (geez.. i'm a workaholic?!?!).. very shacked.. best way to make ken remember the word is to get ken to write the chinese word on paper.. i bought a 70mm x 70mm square exercise book.. super big boxes so that he can write in them.. also i printed big square boxes 70mm x 70mm.. 5x10 boxes on an A4 for practice.. these A4 are the back of my company print outs.. company really waste a lot of paper.. example of Ken's chinese writing:

one day, my ken will shine, i'm sure.. meantime, ken and i both move along slowly, taking baby steps.. mabbe one day, i will take up chinese calligraphy lessons.. i always love them.. but never had the chance to learn.. one day.. one day..

Biow, you are not alone. I am also tempted to learn Chinese due to my work. Maybe I will learn together with Derick too.
